THE VALUE OF GREYS

“GOOD COLOR IN A PAINTING IS NOT ALL THAT CERTAIN PRETTINESS THAT THE VULGAR DEMAND.” These are strong words, maybe controversial words, from John F. Carlson, but they spark interest in what is good color.

We shall explore the judicious use of tonal, muted and elegant color. Most of the historical as well as contemporary work that I admire has good color embedded in and “set up” with great tonal grays. We start with the basics of value, design, so we get on the same page. We paint a lot. We do a lot of “starts.” We are going to rework studies to take things further. We are gonna have fun.
